What is Rembrandt lighting?
- It is the style of lighting which often appears on subjects painted by Rembrandt the famous artist. It was one of his trademarks. The triangle patch of light in Rembrandt will be on the side of the face most prominent to camera. Rembrandt is usually used on men's faces or women when in dramatic and low key scenes.
- Rembrandt lighting at its most basic level is constructed with a single light source placed approximately 45 degrees offset from the subject and a bit higher than eye level, lighting the side of the face that is farthest from the camera.
Critique
My favorite photo was the split lighting effect on Ryan's face. The background of this photo was the black wall. First thing that drew me into the photo was how the lighting gave Ryan's eye a very nice effect and made the blue color pop. One way the photo could have been improved is if the angle was more straight on and center with this face.
